rich dark hot chocolate

cocao

It may be 70 degrees and sunny here in Denver today (sorry, East Coast!), but I still managed to crave some hot chocolate after lunch. Enter the healthier, 2 minute version of homemade hot chocolate. This satisfying drink tastes like dessert and is made with milk of your choice, honey, cocoa powder and the optional vanilla and sea salt (salted caramel hot chocolate from starbucks, anyone?).

Add all ingredients to a small saucepan, stir with a whisk, and heat to a simmer (about 2 minutes).

cocoa ingred

I blended mine with my pinterest mason jar blender trick to make it a bit more frothy, but that’s totally optional.

Some people don’t know just how healthy pure cacao powder can be, but check out the below nutrition statistics:

For a 2 tablespoon serving: 3g fiber, 54 mg of magnesium, 1 mg copper & high in flavonoids which help protect against cancer.

Note: for those sensitive to caffeine and wanting to drink this beverage before bed, it does contain 25 mg caffeine. For reference, 1 cup of regular coffee contains 95 mg caffeine.

Note #2: I would imagine adding some coconut oil and/or grass-fed butter before blending would be amazing and make it even more decadent. A bullet-proof hot chocolate. Sad I didn’t try this!
