apple bacon turkey burgers with maple dijon dressing

These little burgers were last night’s dinner. They’re small burgers, but Mitch managed to eat 9 if that tells you how good they are/were. Sometimes turkey burgers can be really bland and boring but that all changes when you add bacon and diced apple. So much flavor!

Start by cooking your bacon. I started cooking bacon in the oven and I will never go back. No bacon grease splashing and burning me anymore! Preheat oven to 350 and cook for 10 or so minutes. Some people like their bacon crispier than others so the cook time is dependent on that. Let your bacon cool while you prep your other ingredients.

Now, dice your apple and onion. No need to dice the apple into super tiny pieces. Having a bit of apple in the burger is delicious.

Saute the apple and onion with coconut oil, salt, pepper, chopped rosemary and garlic powder.

After about 5 minutes, add to your ground turkey. Chop the bacon and add that too. Just like the apple, no need to chop the bacon into tiny little pieces. Having a larger piece of bacon in the burger is key.

Combine, then form into patties. This is a very wet mixture so I don’t recommend using your hands. I used a 1/4 measuring cup and it worked great.

Bake for 20-25 minutes at 350F. until golden.

To make the maple dijon dressing, combine all ingredients and either whisk to combine or shake in a mason jar like this.

You can use the dressing on a salad like we did or use it as a sauce if you are eating the burgers on a lettuce wrap or with a bun. Enjoy:)

Ingredients
  1. For the Burgers
  2. 1.5 lbs ground turkey (you could also use chicken)
  3. 2 small granny smith apples - diced
  4. 1 medium onion - diced
  5. 8 slices bacon - cooked until crispy and roughly chopped
  6. 1 stem rosemary - sprigs removed and chopped (if you don't have rosemary they will still turn out)
  7. 1 tsp garlic powder
  8. 1/2 tsp each salt and pepper
  9. For the Dressing
  10. 3 tbsp real maple syrup - not pancake syrup
  11. 3 tbsp dijon mustard
  12. 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  13. 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  14. salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
  1. For the Burgers
  2. Preheat oven to 350F.
  3. Place bacon on a parchment-lined baking sheet - you can choose to place the bacon on the paper or use a cooling rack so the grease drips down onto the parchment and you have easy clean-up
  4. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until it reaches your desired crispness
  5. While bacon is cooking, dice your apple and onion and remove your ground turkey from the package and put in a large bowl
  6. Preheat a skillet and add coconut oil or butter
  7. Sautee your apple and onion, rosemary, garlic powder and salt and pepper for about 5 minutes - you don't want it to cook down too much - you still want texture in your burger
  8. After 5 minutes or less, add your apple and onion mixture to your ground turkey
  9. Chop cooled bacon and add to your turkey and combine all ingredients
  10. Using a 1/4 c measuring cup, scoop burgers onto a parchment-lined baking sheet with about 1.5 inches between each burger - I needed two baking sheets
  11. Bake at 350F. for 20-25 minutes or until golden on the edges
  12. Serve over lettuce or with a lettuce wrap or bun
  13. For the Dressing
  14. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl or a mason jar
  15. Serve as a dressing on a salad or a sauce if you are serving the burgers on a bun or in lettuce leaves
