27 week baby update

September 3, 2016 by katiebenson Leave a Comment

Another week!  I can’t believe these are my last few days in the second trimester. Time is truly flying and I can’t believe we will be meeting the twins in just about two months (hopefully – stay in the there babes!). We’re heading to Austin as soon as I am done writing this post for a little Labor Day getaway. We figure we might as well go on little trips whenever we can before the babies are born since it won’t be nearly as easy once they’re here. We also love Austin and think we found a pretty good AirbNb in a fun neighborhood that allows us to walk to lots of fun restaurants and coffee shops etc. Here’s the listing if you ever want to go!

We had a growth scan this week at our Maternal Fetal Specialist and found out the twins are growing nicely! Baby A is still slightly larger than baby B. He’s 2.3 lbs and baby A is 2.1 lbs. This puts baby B in the 31st percentile and baby A in the 18th. If baby B is less than 10% at our next growth scan in a month then we will have to start going weekly to monitor his growth – so I am crossing my fingers he fattens up! It’s really interesting though because at 27 weeks on a singleton growth chart, both babies are right where they should be…so I have no idea where they are getting these percentiles! I feel good about their growth and size though, and will just continue to eat lots of fat and protein to help them grow and be healthy.

Week 27

The twins: According to my app, the twins are about 14.4″ long and weight about 1.9lb. But, as I said up above, at our appointment on Tuesday baby A was measuring about 2lbs 3oz and baby B was measuring 2lbs 1oz. Each baby has gained about 1 lb since our last growth scan a month ago and I feel good about that! Here’s a pic of our ultrasound we had this week – baby A was not cooperating, but we got a pretty decent face shot of baby B – he’s the squishy chubby one in the middle. I am actually not a fan of 3D ultrasounds – I prefer the 2D ones – they’re not as alien-like 😉

Cravings and aversions: Wanting everything iced. Iced tea (half green tea half passion tea at starbucks is my favorite thing right now), ice water, kombucha over ice. Pretty much the same as last week. I am so much hotter lately and wishing we lived somewhere a bit cooler. These “feel like triple digit days” are rough! I also still love cold melon, and started wanting apples more the past week or so. I think it’s my body telling me that fall is here, even though it doesn’t really feel like it. Honey crisps are my absolute favorite but haven’t bought any yet! Not really having any aversions, but don’t really want eggs like I used to. My goal is to eat two/day and I definitely haven’t been doing that lately.

Hair, skin and nails: My skin is still not the best, but definitely a lot better. No idea why I’ve been breaking out a lot lately but could be the changes in hormones. My nails have been growing like crazy, and my hair is super thick too. Perks of pregnancy, although I love my nails short, so it’s kind of annoying for me.

Wearing: Dresses, workout shorts, flowy tank tops etc. I am just not a fan of maternity clothes. The one maternity dress I have still fits really awkwardly – it’s puffy and weird, even though it should be tight… so I am sticking to my regular h&m dresses I have bought, some old navy tanks I bought in size large, and my regular workout tanks and shorts. On the weekends I basically live in dresses when we go to dinner or out with friends (aka we’re home by 9).

Sleeping: This week has been a little more challenging with sleep. I still sleep pretty well, but I wake up once or twice to go to the bathroom. As soon as I go though, I seem to go right back to sleep. I’ve also noticed I’m sleepier this week and feel like I need naps again…people say this happens in the third trimester, so I kind of expected it. We went to the Coldplay concert last weekend in Dallas and didn’t end up getting to bed until after 2am, and I couldn’t believe how awful I felt the next day! I don’t know how women work 40-60 hour work weeks when they’re pregnant – especially with twins – because I felt like I couldn’t move off the couch the next day.

Names: We still like our two first names and have settled on one middle name, but aren’t 100% with the second middle!

27 Weeks

Bump: Bigger for sure, which is to be expected:) I can’t imagine what I’ll look like in the next 8 weeks or so!

Exercise: So bad lately, even though we did go to the gym this morning and it felt really good. I’ve been walking June more in the evenings before dinner (in all my layers to avoid mosquitos), so that has been amazing. I feel somewhat guilty not staying inside (because of zika) but I feel so much better when I am able to go outside and go on walks after a day inside, on the computer. This is the bug spray I use if you’re curious – and an article that I read that made me want to buy it!

Baby purchases: I bought two little sleeper outfits for the twins this week and two packages of cloth diapers because I hear those are the best burp rags. I bought the sleeper outfits because they seem soo versatile. They are “gowns” so they can wear them to bed and we don’t have to worry about unzipping or unsnapping anything to change their diapers, but then they also have this little foldable piece of fabric that comes up around their legs should we want them to be “wrapped up” while they sleep. They also have mittens, so I figured they were a good buy and at least worth a shot. I am hoping they sleep in them a lot when they’re first born. I also bought Broncos onesies that are jersey material…couldn’t help myself!

Nursery: No progress this week! We need to hang some shelves for their books, and then I think I will order a few prints for another wall. I also want to make the guest bed look cuter…but we will see. Everything pretty much is clean and put away so I guess that’s progress! I love sitting in the nursery though – our glider is the most comfortable thing ever and I highly recommend to any future moms. We have it in the same color pictured below – dove gray performance velvet – SO soft!I also love the little wooden animals and the lamp on our changing table. I know these probably won’t stay put once I am actually using this as a functioning changing table – but for now they’re cute!

Supplements: Same as before, but I keep forgetting to take my prenatals! Here’s a post I wrote this week that covers what I am taking and why.

What’s next: My glucose test! I have it on Wednesday and am super curious to see if I pass. I mentioned it in my last post, but I have always had some trouble regulating my blood sugar and my fasting blood sugar is normally on the high end, so it makes me a little more nervous for this test than others may be. We will see! If I don’t pass the first time they will have me take another test that’s a bit longer to “confirm” the diagnosis. I think I will write a blog post about gestational diabetes so people have a better understanding of what it is. I also go back to the “high risk” Dr. in 1 month when I am 31 weeks for another growth scan.

Weight gain: I weighed myself this week and it gained another pound or so, bringing me to almost 25 lbs gained. This is a good number that I feel good about! If I continue to gain about 2 lbs/week, I will probably gain close to 40ish lbs when the twins are born. I just want all of the weight to be “healthy” weight for the twins, so I try to eat pretty healthy and stick to whole foods with lots of protein and fat. Even though last night I had lots of desserts at our friend’s dinner party – snickers rice crispy treats couldn’t be turned down.

Stretch marks: None so far. Thanks collagen peptides😉

Any worries? Not really minus this glucose test on Wednesday, but I am not necessarily worried about it. All is good so far and I am super thankful for a healthy pregnancy (knock on wood)!
